Reading a page is not the same as reading an article
A modern article page is mostly not the article. Navigation, a cookie banner, three newsletter prompts, related-story boxes, comments. Read that aloud verbatim and half the audio is furniture.
So the page is parsed the way a reader-mode does: find the block that is actually the article, keep its paragraphs and headings, discard everything around it. That is why the result starts at the first sentence rather than at "Skip to main content".
Pages that will not open
Some will fail, and it is worth knowing which before you assume something is broken.
- Anything behind a paywall or a login — we fetch the page as an anonymous visitor and get what they get.
- Sites that block automated readers outright. That is their decision and we identify ourselves honestly rather than working around it.
- Pages that are an application rather than a document, where the text arrives after the page does.
- PDFs linked from a page — download it and use the PDF tool instead.
Listening to a piece you intend to quote
Narration is of generated text, so it is a paraphrase and not a source. Anything you plan to quote should be read in the original, at the original address, which stays one click away.
The honest use is triage and consumption: deciding whether something deserves your attention, and getting through the things that do.
What it will not do
- Paywalled and login-protected pages cannot be read.
- Sites that block automated readers are respected rather than worked around.
- The narration is of generated text, so it is not quotable as the author's words.
- Fetching and reading is free. The AI tools and the narration are part of the subscription.
