What text preserves, and what it quietly drops

Converting speech to text is not lossless, and it is worth knowing what falls away before you rely on a transcript instead of the video.

Text keeps the words and their order. It usually keeps the timing, if timestamps are enabled. What it does not keep is tone, emphasis, pacing and everything visual — the diagram on screen, the demonstration, the expression that signalled the speaker was joking. A transcript of a tutorial that says "click here, then drag it over there" is close to useless without the screen.

Speaker changes are the other common casualty. Automatic captions rarely mark who is talking, so an interview or panel collapses into one undifferentiated stream. This tool colours speaker labels when the caption track provides them, but it cannot invent labels that were never there.

Text wins whenever you need to search, quote, skim or revisit. It wins for anyone who reads faster than people speak, which is most people, and it is the accessible option for anyone who cannot easily use audio.

How to read a transcript efficiently

A transcript was never written to be read, and going front to back is usually the slowest way to use one.

Start with search. If you came for something specific, your browser find is faster than any amount of skimming, and it covers the whole transcript rather than what happens to be on screen.

Use timestamps as a table of contents. Speakers change subject at fairly regular intervals, so scanning the timecodes while reading only the first few words of each line surfaces the structure in seconds.

Expect rougher prose than writing. Speech is full of restarts, filler and sentences that never resolve. That is not a transcription fault, it is what talking looks like written down — and the cleaned-up version is available as an AI feature when the raw form gets in the way.

What to do with the text once you have it

Converting a video to text is rarely the goal in itself. It is a step toward something, and the something determines how much of the text you actually need.

If the destination is understanding — you want the argument, not the words — the text is an intermediate. Reading it once and then generating a summary or a set of key points from it usually beats reading it twice, because the second read tends to reinforce whatever you noticed first rather than surface what you missed.

If the destination is a quotation, the opposite holds: you want the exact words, in context, with the timecode, and no processing in between. Anything a model touches introduces the possibility of a paraphrase that reads like a quote.

If the destination is study, text is where the useful transformations happen — outlines, question sets, flashcards — because each of those requires the whole content in a form that can be restructured, which video is not.

And if the destination is simply to have watched the thing faster, reading and stopping is a legitimate answer. Not every video needs to become an artefact.
