How caption timing works, and why lines break where they do

Caption tracks are not stored as sentences. They are stored as cues: short chunks of text, each with a start time and a duration, sized to fit on screen for a readable moment. A cue is typically a few seconds and a handful of words.

That is why a timestamped transcript breaks mid-sentence. The boundaries follow display timing, not grammar. It looks wrong on the page but it is precisely what makes timestamps useful — each timecode points at a genuine moment in the audio rather than at an approximation.

Automatically generated tracks tend to have finer-grained cues than human-written ones, because the recogniser emits text continuously while a human captioner groups it into readable lines.

Citing a video by timecode

A timecode is the only precise way to reference a claim in a video, and it is easy to make verifiable. Appending a start parameter to a YouTube URL opens the video at that second, so a reader lands exactly where you did.

Two things worth checking before you rely on one. Timestamps come from the caption track, so if the captions drift relative to the audio — which happens on some automatic tracks — the timecode drifts with them. And translated transcripts lose per-line timing entirely, because translation reflows the text and the original cue boundaries no longer apply.

Using timestamps to navigate long material
